Landing In the Right Place and Still Losing
A couple of nights ago, we had to do a show in Moncton, Canada. After our concert, I came back to my room, showered, and got into bed. As I was scrolling through the T.V. for something to watch as I started drifting to sleep, I found that the Colorado vs. Baylor football game was in the 4th quarter! Baylor was in the lead. But then…with 37 seconds left, Colorado made a touchdown! So, I go from relaxing to sitting up in bed and screaming. Now the game is tied and overtime is the next step…
I’m going to skip around here.
When the time came for Baylor to make a touchdown, their player runs and jumps into the endzone with the ball to keep the overtime going. But wait…before I tell you what happened, let me say this. I'm no expert, but this is for those who may be clueless about football …I'm just going to use a basic description (I hope I'm making sense...lol!)
The endzone is where you score. You can either bring the ball into the endzone, catch the ball while standing in the endzone, or the ball just needs to be in your hands when any part of you gets in the endzone. Either way, here’s the formula:
You holding the ball + any part of you in the endzone = TOUCHDOWN!
Ok, I’ll say it like this: the ball must be in your possession if any part of you is in the endzone, in order for you to have officially scored. You follow me? Of course you do!
Alright…now back to the game.
Baylor’s player ran to the endzone and then leaped over the line with the ball in hopes to score. But by the time he landed in the endzone, the ball was already out of his hands and in the air. Simply put, he fumbled the ball, or he lost possession of it. Soooo...that meant, no touchdown, no score, no victory…no more overtime...Baylor…lost.
What is my point here?
As I've already said, any part of your body can be in the endzone as long as you are holding that ball, which is what this young man was trying to achieve. Although he landed in the right place to score, he didn’t keep possession and still…lost.
I’m pretty sure that you get it now.
Have you ever landed in the right place to win, but still didn’t take possession to score?
Sometimes we can get so caught up in “making it” or “arriving” that we forget that the ball can still end up out of our hands. Therefore, we end up losing what we were working hard to obtain. That young man ran quickly and jumped up with all he had to get that ball over that line. Although he was in the right place, he still somehow managed to lose possession.
You see, it’s not enough to run into the endzone, stand there, or jump in... it's about what’s in your hands. Standing or leaping in the endzone and not catching the ball or the ball falling out of your hands is the same as being outside of the endzone without it. But guess what? Even if a player isn’t in the endzone yet and they have possession of the ball, it means their team still has a chance to score.
Every time you score, you get closer to winning.
What do I mean? Just because you make a touchdown in the first quarter, doesn’t mean the other team doesn’t have the rest of the game to do the same. You must keep scoring until the last quarter or even in overtime, to ensure you…win.
Whatever place or platform you’ve been given, it’s not enough to get there, you’ve got to keep scoring to stay there. This explains how some of the rich and famous have gone broke…they reached a certain point, but never possessed what it meant to be there. Therefore, they weren’t there for very long.
Scoring looks different for everyone. In this case (football game), scoring meant a stadium full of screaming people. Not only that, but once the win was confirmed, it also looked like fans flooding the football field and even tearing down the goal post!!! Lol!!! But…sometimes when we score in life, it’s very quiet. No one is clapping or cheering. But that’s okay! Each score is another step that will guarantee your win.
All I’m saying to you is that maybe you’ve been near the endzone a long time and even decided to jump in, but never made a touchdown because you have yet to… possess. Take the time to evaluate how you’re positioned. Are you standing in the right place for the ball to be thrown? Can you jump high enough to catch whatever is coming your way? Better yet, spend your time learning how to get and keep the ball in your hands. Because again, the truth is, as long as a part of you is in the endzone while holding the ball, you have touched…down!!! Therefore, learning how to possess puts you in the position to score, which puts you in the running, to win!
Everybody wants to win, but few take the time to master scoring.
Getting or landing in the right place and still losing has been the soundtrack of my life many times. I’m at the point now, where I’m making sure that I keep scoring because the win has to be next, if I don’t stop.
Run to the endzone…jump in, if necessary, but make sure to possess…SCORE…WIN…in that order. And when you do? Celebrate.
You can even tear down the goal post.
